The launch of a gourmet ketchup by Heinz may signal an expansion of the red stuff from greasy spoons and American diners to more upmarket restaurants.
The Special Blend tomato sauce contains a combination of a dozen ripe, plump tomatoes, cayenne pepper, Demerara sugar, lemon juice, sea salt and white wine vinegar – a recipe that’s taken chefs a year to perfect, and one that’s getting food critics raving. The taste is more intense and rich, and Heinz recommend serving with sausages, white meats and smoky dishes.
Even the bottle itself is given a posh makeover, covering the traditional glass bottle with a brown label, evoking a more rustic feel to the familiar household item.
Following in the footsteps of Marmite’s Champagne edition, Heinz say the new sauce is a result of a growing consumer interest in quality products with premium ingredients. Caroline Clarke, Marketing Manager, Heinz Tomato Ketchup, said: “Heinz Special Blend Tomato Sauce responds to these demands and is the ideal condiment for families who want a more sophisticated table sauce to match their palate.”
