Momma Cherri & Levi Roots BBQ bash
The celebrity chefs teamed up at Momma’s Brighton restaurant to celebrate the Fourth of July

While Britain cooled off at the weekend under a heavy downpour, Charita Jones and Levi Roots were ensuring things were hotting up in Brighton, with a Cajun BBQ-style street party.

American chef Charita Jones, the face behind Momma Cherri’s Big House and probably the most famous of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, threw the party as part of her Fourth of July celebrations, and to welcome new bar Northern Lights and North African restaurant The Blue Man to the street.

Crowds gathered to enjoy a hearty BBQ and enjoy some live music from local bands, and Dragon’s Den entrepreneur, Levi Roots, was also on hand with his guitar to spice things up.

“Charita’s done a great deal for black Caribbean people in Brighton. It’s nice being here, there’s a lot of black history,” Levi enthused, pointing at the abundance of black memorabilia decorating the Soul Shack walls. “It’s very homely.”

Levi is currently promoting his new album, Red Hot, which is due for release in August. “The new album is more about my roots, like Bob Marley. The Reggae Reggae sauce song was just something fun to promote the brand, but it’s not all I’m about. I want to fuse my two passions together – music and food.”

The celebrity chef is also due to release six new cooking sauces and a chilled food range, but hasn’t ruled out an expansion of his current restaurant and takeaway outlet, Papine Jerk Centre in South London.

Momma Cherri’s Big House famously went into administration last year, but was saved from closure by her daughter, who has taken the reigns under a different company.
