ECO restaurant launches ice-cream and ham pizzas for expectant mums
London pizza restaurant ECO, have launched ‘Pregnancy Pizzas’ for expectant mothers, with some very bizarre topping combinations

After being inundated with bizarre pizza topping requests by pregnant customers, ECO restaurant owner Charmaine Wasif decided to create her own dishes especially for the mums-to-be.

Combinations such as baked bean and sultanas, and ham, banana, mozzarella and ice-cream, are just some of the toppings to make it onto Wasif’s new add-on menu of eight ‘Pregnancy Pizzas’.

Wasif worked closely alongside nutritionist Dr. Sarah Schenker, to create the specific menu for the outlet in Chiswick, which is known for its unusually large ‘yummy-mummy’ population. The menu has been designed to provide important nutrients that both mothers and growing babies need, and will ease any doubts pregnant women may have about the safety of the food they’re eating, particularly with cheeses.

“We were approached several times by pregnant mothers wanting strange things,” explained Wasif. “Once we were asked for a mars bar and sardine pizza, which we made, but I personally wouldn’t try it. We do enjoy things like that, so we thought, what the hell, lets do something with a new dimension to what we’re doing.

“Pregnant women aren’t really looked after in that way in other restaurants, but if we’re getting a request and the demand is there it’s about paying attention to what people like.”

The more ‘normal’ pizzas in the range include grilled aubergine and lentil, fresh salmon and sour cream, steak and seeds and mozzarella and avocado.

“Our most popular pizza is the ice-cream one. Husbands have tried it and kids love it. The ice-cream does melt a bit but I think it’s just a very different option to have.”

The pizzas are currently only available in the Chiswick branch of ECO, but Wasif has stated that if the demand arises at their Clapham restaurant, they would happily extend the menu.

While the company currently have no plans for the expansion of ECO, Wasif told BigH they are focusing mainly on ‘winding out’ more outlets of their delicatessen-style caf?, ESCA.
