Whitbread has announced plans to build nine new Premier Inn hotels over the next three years, adding another 1,000 rooms to its portfolio.
Five of the new sites - Glasgow, Kendall, Mere Park, Trowbridge and Rugeley – will also include pub restaurants while the other four will contain integrated restaurants.
Whitbread plans to open two London hotels, in Greenwich and Aldgate, in time for the 2012 Olympics, boosting the chain`s offering to 8,500 rooms. The last two hotels will be built in Preston and Doncaster.
The total investment in the company`s expansion is expected to be £100m with the cash capital invested amounting to £25m.
Mark Anderson, Property Director for Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants, said: ”This is bright news from Whitbread in increasingly gloomy economic times. We have disciplined targets for growth. These investments demonstrate that we are well on our way to delivering them. For us, it’s more a case of opportunity bites than credit crunch."
Anderson said the company was continuing to look for "prime sites for development" across the UK and Ireland. Last week it announced it was swapping 21 Express By Holiday Inn hotels with Mitchells & Butlers in exchange for 44 pub restaurants.
Joint sites will be opening from 2010 in the following areas:
Glasgow Business Park - 60 room Premier Inn with a Beefeater restaurant
Kendall, Lake District - 55 room Premier Inn with a Beefeater restaurant
Mere Park in Newport, Shropshire - 50 room Premier Inn with a Beefeater restaurant
Trowbridge, Wiltshire - 60 room Premier Inn with a Table Table restaurant
Towers Business Park in Rugeley, Staffordshire - 50 room Premier Inn with a Table Table restaurant
