Event to push seasonal as well as local message
Organisers of an event to showcase the wealth of local food to chefs and restaurateurs in London will also underline the importance of using produce when it is in season.

Local to London is designed to get more local food into businesses in the city, but the food being sampled by producers and growers from the East and South East at New Covent Garden Market on October 1 will not only be grown in the area but will also be at its quality peak.

“Sourcing local, seasonal produce makes sense in so many ways,” said Henriette Reinders, Director of the South East Food Group Partnership. “Why put apples, for example, on a menu through the early summer, when you have easy access to the best soft fruits in this country. That’s why we are keen to demonstrate more than lip service at the event with a range of seasonal chef demonstrations to see how easily recipes can be adapted to the seasons.”

The event will kick off with breakfast, followed by opportunities to meet the producers and the chance to see different ways of cooking seasonal produce at a range of master classes and demonstrations.

The team behind Local to London is keen to encourage the catering trade to follow the seasons and source from more local producers. It says that the UK’s temperate climate provides a wealth of varied fruits and vegetables throughout the year which should be  enjoyed at their peak, with no flavour lost in transit or through forced growing.
