Gather student teams for Brakes Chef Challenge
Student chefs are being urged to gather into teams to enter next year’s Team Chef Challenge

For students to be in with a chance of competing in the final of the Brakes Student Team Chef Challenge at ScotHot next March, they will need to submit their paper entries by the end of the month.

The competition, in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs, has been designed to increase support for British cooking, and will require teams to use local and regional produce to prepare a three-course meal for four covers in the live cook-off final.

Student teams from Ayr College (pictured right), have won the title for two years running, after beating off competition from hundreds of hopeful students.

To enter, students working toward their NVQ Level three should gather in teams of three and submit their entry form, which is downloadable via the Brakes website. Short-listed entrants will then be chosen to compete at five regional heats (Scotland, Wales, Northern, Central and Southern), where their cooking will be judged on regionality, taste, presentation, teamwork, seasoning, culinary skills, working methods and overall balance.

Just five teams will go forward to compete at the live final at ScotHot in Glasgow next March 2009 for a chance to win a Global knife set and a five-day work experience placement with Head Chef of County Hall Christopher Basten. Second and third places will receive £150 each of Brakes Catering Equipment vouchers.

Downloadable entry forms are available from, and must be received by 30 November.
