JD Wetherspoon launches cut-price food and drink menu
Pub giant JD Wetherspoon (JDW) will today begin selling a cut-price food and drink menu, with meals priced at just £2.99 each, and pints of Greene King IPA and San Miguel costing under £1.
The move has been implemented by JDW as a way of allowing people to visit the pub ‘without it costing them too much’, and will be an ‘indefinite’ measure in place of the company’s regular January sale.
“Unlike most sales that start in January, the offers will not be ending within days and will run indefinitely,” said chief executive John Hutson. “People enjoy going to the pub, however, I appreciate that the economic downturn means that they now have to be more careful with their money. It’s a good offer but, at the end of the day, it doesn’t cover a huge range of products.”
The meals now running at £2.99 are cottage pie, chips and peas (made with British beef); ham, eggs and chips (Wiltshire ham, served with two fried free-range eggs); sausages, baked beans and chips (award-winning Lincolnshire sausages); spicy tomato pasta; and a jacket potato with tuna mayonnaise and salad. JDW will also be promoting a bottle of Blossom Hill Rose for £4.99, a single measure of Sailor Jerry rum (plus mixer) for £1.29 and a bottle of Jacques cider (750ml) for £3.99.
While JDW`s promotion is aimed at encouraging consumers into their premises, it is thought the drastic price cuts will have a knock-on effect on the pub industry, forcing JDW`s competitors to reduce their prices as well. The Town and City Pub Company has already announced it will revisit its pricing structure in order to remain a contender in the cheap pub market.
