Peyton & Byrnes al fresco restaurant The Lawn leaves Fulham Palace less than a year since opening there

The Lawn, the restaurant opened by Oliver Peyton at Fulham Palace last summer, has closed.

The restaurant, which gained a string of positive reviews for its pleasant al-fresco setting when it opened in June 2008, was originally set to re-open on March 1 following a period of refurbishment.

However, a spokesman for Peyton & Byrne said today that the company was no longer involved in running the restaurant at Fulham Palace. He was unable to confirm if the Lawn would be moved elsewhere or the reasons for its closure.

A message posted on the Fulham Palace website says: "Peyton and Byrne are no longer working at Fulham Palace. The Lawn Restaurant has reverted to The Drawing Room Cafe, a relaxing, elegant room overlooking the extensive gardens."

In an interview with Hammersmith & Fulham Council`s publication H&F News last year, owner Oliver Peyton had said working in a Grade 1-listed building presented problems, but was committed to the restaurant`s long-term future.

He said: "We’ve got a planning application in for an expanded kitchen, but I can’t even dig a hole without having an architect around. That’s the challenge of working with a Grade 1-listed building. But this is a long-term project. We have a 10-year lease and we will make it work."
