Nestle Toque d'Or 2009 finalists revealed
The names of the five college teams who go through to the final of the 21st Nestle Toque dOr competition are announced

The five college teams to make it through to the final of this year’s Nestle Toque d’Or have been announced.

Teams from North Devon College, Blackpool & the Fylde College, Sussex Downs College, Belfast Metropolitan College and City of Bristol College will battle it out for the 2009 title at the final at the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham in June.

The five finalists were pulled from a shortlist of 16 catering colleges after impressing a panel of judges with their preparation and serving of a three-course meal.

Tony Robertson, chairman of judges, said: "All the teams demonstrated a clear understanding of what was required from them and rose to the challenge on the day. Students have not only shown real passion and dedication, but also an astonishingly high level of creativity and business sense, incorporating key industry trends such as local sourcing ingredients.

"We are looking for that wow factor in the kitchen – some sizzle and atmosphere and that is what we have seen here. The Grand Finals promise to be a truly exciting event.”

The competition is designed to give students the chance to test their skills gained in the college classroom and transfer them to a competitive commercial kitchen.

Finalists will have to cook a three-course lunch to 100 paying diners under the watch of the judging panel at the finals which take place from June 10 to 14.

All finalists win catering equipment from Nestle Professional and the overall winning team will receive £4k worth of equipment and a study trip abroad.
