Costa Coffee has completed their search to find the world’s finest barista at their annual competition, with a British contestant taking first prize.

Costa’s Barista of the Year Competition saw Gabor Kamondi, of Costa’s Dorking store, fight off competition from as far a field as China, India and the Middle East.

The Baristas were tested on coffee-making skills, industry knowledge, flair and passion. In the final round, contestants created their own unique drink that was judged on taste, presentation and innovation.

The panel of judges, which included Costa Roastery technical manager, Gennaro Peliccia and Wine expert and TV presenter Charles Metcalf, were impressed by Mr Kamondi’s signature drink Pick Mint.

Mr Kamondi’s blend of espresso coffee and mint was inspired by his love of After Eights mints. He said: “I am absolutely delighted to have won. To be awarded for my Barista skills and to win such a prestigious competition is amazing for me. “

As competition winner Mr Kamondi won a holiday for two in a coffee growing region of his choice, the Barista of the Year Trophy and a winner’s uniform to wear to work.

This year’s runner-up was Jonathan Scott from Carlisle and in third place was Elia Burbello from Cork, Ireland.
