Cedar Court Hotels has appointed Andrew Coney, former general manager of The Waldorf Hotel, to oversee its new £20m flagship hotel in York.

Coney joins Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa having also held general manager positions at The Cavendish in London and Slaley Hall Hotel & Golf Resort in Northumberland.

The flagship property, a 107-bedroom hotel & spa complete with restaurant, cocktail bar, private dining rooms, meeting rooms and swimming pool, will open next spring at the former site of the North Eastern Railway Company, a Grade 2 listed building.

Coney said Cedar Hotels had offered him a 'unique opportunity' to revive the 'glamour, panache and luxury' of the building.

“This is a chance to open a new hotel in one of the most beautiful cities in the world," he said. "When it’s unveiled early next year, The Grand will become a new landmark in York – bringing exceptional standards of service, accommodation and style to the city.  Our ambition is to create York’s first 5-star hotel, and we will achieve that through meticulous attention to detail.”
