London hotels have been voted the worst in Europe, with those in Birmingham rated only slightly better, according to hotel price comparison website Trivago.co.uk.

The Trivago Reputation Ranking, an analysis of the website’s 2.7m hotel reviews from the most popular 50 cities in Europe, found that guests staying at London hotels were the least satisfied with their experience, giving an average rating of just 70 out of 100 points.

Hotels in Birmingham and Manchester were also found to deliver a substandard experience, with guests placing the Midlands cities in 49th and 45th place with just 71 and 73 points respectively. And while hotels in Glasgow were given only 73 points, those in Edinburgh, the final UK city on the list, had the best online reputation with 75 points.

Trivago also found that cities where hotels charged higher than average rates for a standard double room appeared at the bottom of the Reputation Ranking, showing that high prices ‘do not always guarantee good quality’. Classic destinations where room rates are higher than average, such as Rome, Istanbul, Milan and Paris, were ranked in the lower third of the Reputation Ranking.

The cities offering the best hotel experience are:

1. Dresden, Germany
2. Bruges, Belgium
3. Bologna, Italy
4. Salzburg, Austria
5. Venice, Italy
