Coeliac UK’s 2009 Gluten-free Chef of the Year has been named as Peter McKenzie, head chef for Lanarkshire Council, at an awards ceremony held at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons.
Run in association with the Institute of Hospitality, the competition aims to highlight the need for increased provision of gluten-free menu options, for diners living with coeliac disease.
McKenzie was chosen by Blanc for his menu of Pan Seared Fillet of Red Mullet, Breast of Pheasant with Wild Mushroom Polenta and Vanilla and Basil Panacotta with Balsamic Roasted Strawberries, and wins a one week placement at Gleneagles alongside Andrew Fairlie.
Runner up in the competition was Candice Webber, head chef at St Paul’s Cathedral Restaurant. Shanice Parris, student at Westminster Kingsway College, was also voted the Up-and-Coming Gluten-free Chef of the Year.
