Action Against Hunger (AAH) is appealing to the UK’s restaurants to support its emergency response to the Haiti earthquake, which is feared to have killed 50,000 people.

The organiser of the annual Fight Hunger Eat Out campaign, in which around 500 restaurants raise funds to help end hunger and malnutrition in countries around the world, has now launched an emergency appeal for funds to help AAH aid workers support the victims in Haiti.

Sophie Noonan, head of fundraising at AAH, said that with Haiti being the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, the effects of the earthquake have been ‘catastrophic’.

“This is the first time we’re doing an emergency appeal, and we urgently need funds to support our response,” she said. “We have a lot of support from restaurants and they make a real difference to our life saving programmes and relief programmes to the extent that we are able to respond to an emergency like this, but the needs here are enormous.”

AAH teams currently working on the ground in Haiti, are being joined by an emergency response team along with a planeload of emergency stocks including water and sanitation equipment and food aid supplies.

How to get involved

Action Against Hunger has suggested a number of ways restaurants can get involved in fundraising for the Haiti Emergency Appeal:

· Donate vouchers for a meal for two to be auctioned online by AAH
· Acquire posters and a collection box to encourage donations from employees and diners
· Organise a special fundraising evening
· Add an optional donation of £1 per head to the menu
· Donate all proceeds from a particular dish

Restaurants looking to donate vouchers or get involved in other ways can get further information, as well as promotion material such as collection boxes, posters and POS by emailing x.qblyr@nnuhx.bet or calling Karen Doyle on 020 8293 6190.
