The Swan Hotel & Spa at Newby Bridge in Cumbria has re-opened for business six months after floods swept the county.

The 52-bedroom hotel was forced to shut when floodwater damaged the ground floor of the converted 17th Century alehouse following heavy rain in November last year.

Following £4m of renovations to the building's interior, the hotel, which includes the VU Spa, the River Room restaurant and the Swan Inn, has re-opened to guests.

A spokesperson for the hotel said that owners the Bardsley family had used the closure as an opportunity to refurbish bedrooms as well as the areas affected by the floods, kitting rooms out with Designers Guild prints and Andrew Martin furniture.

The floods which struck the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth and surrounding areas last year, caused millions of pounds worth of damage to homes and businesses, including a large number of pubs and hotels.

Last month the Lakeside Hotel on the banks of Lake Windermere re-opened following three months of refurbishment work.
