Chipotle Mexican Grill, the US burrito restaurant chain, has opened its first site in the UK on London’s Charing Cross Road.
Serving burritos, burrito bowls, tacos and salads, Chipotle is known in the US for its commitment to serving fast food made from sustainably sourced ingredients.
Steve Ells, founder of Chipotle, said: “We think the prospects are very good for Chipotle in London and around Europe.
“The food culture in Europe is based on local, sustainable and artisanal foods, which are all core values of Chipotle and we have been instrumental in bringing this kind of thinking to fast food in the US.”
While additional London sites are currently being sought, the group is also looking at properties in Paris and Munich as part of European expansion plans.
Chipotle first launched in 1993 and now operates more than 900 restaurants in the US, each of which features the Mayan-inspired artwork of sculptor Bruce Gueswel, and uses the same simple materials to create individually designed interiors.
