Heston Blumenthal, chef patron of The Fat Duck in Bray, has announced his new restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London is to be called Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

The Hyde Park hotel, which is also home to New York chef Daniel Boulud’s Bar Boulud, will launch Blumenthal’s second 140-cover restaurant in December.

Speaking exclusively with Restaurant magazine last summer, Blumenthal said the restaurant ‘would not be another Fat Duck’, rather a ‘research-driven’ concept inspired by historic British dishes with smaller dishes taken from the Bray restaurant’s menu.

In a statement released today, Blumenthal said he found it difficult to find a name for the restaurant.

“Finding a restaurant name is never easy,” he said. “I am still not 100 per cent sure where the name for The Fat Duck came from to this day. For the new restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park I wanted to find a name that encapsulated the concept, which has a strong focus on dishes inspired by historic British gastronomy, but was also a bit of fun.”

The word ‘dinner’ is thought to originate from 13th century French, when it stood for the main meal of the day.
