Over 120 people were evacuated from eco-friendly hotel Rafayel in Battersea yesterday, following a fire in the basement carpark

Ten fire engines and around 50 firefighters from Battersea and other fire stations  took over three hours to control the blaze, which damaged six cars and four motorcycles parked in the base of the Falcon Wharf development.

The five-star, 65-bedroom hotel developed by Ike Latif, which opened last December, was built with the aim to reduce guests’ carbon footprints through the use of technological advances, such as LED lighting.

The London Fire Brigade are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Closure

A spokesperson for the hotel said it would remain closed until the end of next week at the earliest, with the car park out of use for ‘probably longer’.

“We’re currently contacting the insurers to find out how long we will have to be closed for. We’ll be taking reservations again on Friday next week.”

The hotel, which covers three floors of the Falcon Wharf development, also features 15 apartments, a bar, lounge, coffee shop, spa, gym and pool, meeting and conference facilities and two restaurants offering indoor and outdoor dining.
