Gatwick prepars to open a new three-star hotel
Shiva Hotels have signed a deal with Gatwick Airport to operate a new hotel due to be up and running in time for the London Olympics

The 192-bedroom three-star Hampton by Hilton will be built in the current “under-utilised” Longbridge House office space in Gatwick’s North Terminal.

Although still subject to planning permission, the redevelopment work is expected to start early next year so that the hotel can be up and running in time for the 2012 London Olympic games.

The hotel will include a bar and restaurant, conference and event facilities, and a fitness suite.

More passengers, more choice

It will expand Gatwick’s current four-star hotel options, so that passengers also have the choice to stay in the “more affordable but luxury” mid-market option, said Emma Rees, head of property at Gatwick Airport.

“It is also a great example of the innovative, more passenger-focused approach the new leadership team is taking to managing the airport assets, as is the speed at which this deal was agreed,” she added.

Gatwick currently has around 33m passengers travelling through the airport every year.  Over the next decade, it aims to increase that to “at least” 40m by becoming more efficient and improving its service to passengers.

As part of this aim, the airport is investing around £1bn in modernising and upgrading its facilities.

“This new hotel offering will support the anticipated growth in passenger numbers.”
