Whitbread has invested millions of pounds into developing a strategy that will safeguard its hotels and restaurants against rising energy costs and discerning consumers in the future.

The majority of the group’s investment has gone into the provision of sustainable Premier Inn buildings in Tamworth and Burgess Hill, the latter of which also features the first low-carbon Beefeater.

Whitbread claims the company will recoup the investment on each site in under nine years.

Now that the Carbon Trust is encouraging businesses to take advantage of consumers’ increased interest in sustainable operation, Whitbread’s investment is looking very sensible.

BigHospitality spoke to Nigel Graham, head of property supply chain at Whitbread to find out what return the group expects to see on its efforts.
