The Sofitel hotel at London Heathrow has been named the best airport hotel in Europe in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2011.

This is the first year that airport hotels have been recognised as part of the Skytrax awards, and winners were nominated based on a survey of results from over 860,000 hotel guests at more than 194 airport hotels worldwide.

Hotel guests were asked to nominate their favourite airport hotel based on criteria such as the overall quality of staff service, comfort and cleanliness of rooms, the standard of food and beverage, and the location and ease of transfer to airport terminals.

Sofitel London Heathrow won first place in Europe and third place in the global airport hotel awards.

"This is another example where an airport hotel is delivering a top quality 5-star service that one could expect in a downtown or resort location" said Edward Plaisted of Skytrax.

Sofitel is the only Heathrow Airport hotel with direct access to terminal 5 via a covered walkway and other terminals via rail connections. It has 605 bedrooms including 27 suites, 45 meeting rooms, 2 restaurants, 2 bars and a Tea Salon.

The hotel also offers retail shops including a Hair Salon and Jewellery; a State-of-the-art Health Spa and Gym as well as on-site car park.

Second and third place were awarded to the Kempinski Hotel Airport Munich and Mövenpick Hotel Zurich Airport respectively.
