Ministry of Sound has revealed plans to roll out a chain of Hed Kandi bars across London and the South East over the next three years, with the next venue due to open in Brighton this summer.

First launched in 1999, record label Hed Kandi has hosted a long-running series of music events in existing venues across the UK but launched its first trial bar in Clapham, London at the end of last year.

Following a successful first eight months of trading, Ministry of Sound has now instructed property agent Cushman & Wakefield to source an additional three to five bars per year, focusing on affluent, ‘party-minded’ towns in London and the South East.

Thomas Rose, associate for Cushman & Wakefield, told BigHospitality the group would be looking at venues of between 2,000-3,000sqft, but would consider sites on an individual basis.

“Hed Kandi is one of the world’s most successful dance music and lifestyle brands; the UK bar scene hasn’t seen a development of this scale and experience for a number of years,” he said.

Southern concept

It is expected that Ministry of Sound will launch three to five Hed Kandi venues before the end of 2011, and ultimately up to 15 bars in the south. No plans for expanding the concept to the north have been made so far.

Iain Hagger, managing director for the Ministry of Sound Group, said: “Following the success of our Clapham venue we are excited about bringing the Hed Kandi experience to more people across the UK.”

The Brighton venue is due to launch at the end of the summer. The group has also recently launched a Hed Kandi bar in Uptown San Antonio in Ibiza.
