Sriram Aylur, head chef of the Michelin-starred Quilon restaurant, has been named Beer Drinker of the Year by the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group.

Aylur, whose restaurant stocks 18 different beers, was presented with his award by the group's chairman Andrew Griffiths at the Beer Awards in London last week.

Passionate about beer, the chef has created a five-course all British beer menu for the Westminster restaurant, owned by the Taj Group, as well as a Vintage Beer Menu, featuring nine Fuller's beers.

He said: “As beer is Britain’s national drink, with over 90 per cent of it produced in the UK and grown by our hop and barley farmers, I wondered why so many of my fellow restaurateurs were holding vast and expensive stocks of fermented foreign grapes? Wouldn’t customers enjoy the chance to drink beers to suit my delicately spiced south-west coast Indian cuisine?"

Aylur shares the title with 18 others, including Gordon Brown and Michel Roux.
