Launched by BigHospitality’s sister publication The Publican’s Morning Advertiser (PMA), the petition calls on the Government to bring the rate of VAT the British hospitality industry pays in line with its European counterparts.
If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures, it will be debated in the House of Commons.
Twenty-one countries in the European Union have a lower VAT rate for the hotel sector, while 13 have a lower rate for the entire hospitality sector.
French restaurants, pubs and hotels saw VAT cut from 19.65 per cent to 5 per cent, leading to the creation of 21,700 jobs in its first year. This summer the Irish Government also slashed VAT for the sector from 13.5 per cent to 9 per cent.
It is thought a cut in VAT for the British hospitality industry would help create 320,000 jobs during the post-Olympic years.
The petition is part of the PMA’s Thrive on Five campaign, which is encouraging operators to arrange meetings with their local MPs to discuss a reduction in VAT.
