Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner and Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen are among the big-hitting newcomers to join over 500 UK restaurants signed up for a campaign to help raise money for the homeless in the build up to Christmas.

The 2011 StreetSmart restaurant campaign adds a voluntary £1 per table to diners’ bills in participating restaurants. The profits go directly to the charity which gives emergancy food, shelter and advice to the homeless.

Gordon Ramsay said: "It's everyone's chance to do the right thing at the right time with only the gentlest of nudge,” while fellow supporter Stephen Fry said: “StreetSmart is low in bureaucracy and high on delivering where help is needed. We may not be able to solve the question of homelessness but at least by doing something we, in some way, diminish its tyranny.”

A real privilege

Restaurants including Nobu, St John, OXO Tower, e&o and Moro participate in the £1-per-table campaign every year and help raise thousands of pounds for homeless charities. Last year’s campaign saw £465,000 raised for local projects.

Masterchef’s John Torode, who runs Smiths of Smithfields, said: “For over ten years, Smiths of Smithfields have been involved with StreetSmart. It has been a real privilege to be able to contribute in some way to those who have a really tough life. Thank you to all our customers for being so supportive.”

The administration side of the charity is funded entirely by its sponsors Deutsche Bank. For a full list of participating restaurants and for more info about where the money raised goes visit www.streetsmart.org.uk or download the app for iPhone.
