Pub and bar operators 'cautiously optimistic' for 2012 after Christmas trading boost
More than half (53 per cent) of UK pub operators revealed that like-for-life food and drink sales were up by more than 10 per cent in the three weeks from 11 December. Overall, 95 per cent said trade was up year-on-year over the same period.
“These figures reveal the trade received a much-needed sales boost at the end of 2011,” said Kate Nicholls, strategic affairs director for ALMR. “However, significant economic and regulatory challenges remain for many in the industry – not least controlling operating costs, where ourbenchmarking work remains vital.
“The ALMR will continue to lead the charge in fighting for the industry and promoting the hugely-positive economic and cultural impact that pubs and bars have on the UK.”
The year ahead for pubs...
Looking ahead to 2012, the feeling among operators is of cautious optimism. Major events including the London 2012 Olympics, the European Football Championships and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations are adding to that feeling.
One operator commented: “Despite all the doom and gloom, I remain positive about the coming year. I really believe that the operators who know what they are doing will benefit from the feel good factor generated by the Olympic Games."
Another added: “A bumpy ride, but there is plenty of opportunity for good operators.”
The anonymous online survey was conducted among ALMR operator members between 3 and 9 January. Forty‐one members responded to the survey, representing nearly half ofall ALMR pub operator members.
