Meantime London, the Greenwich-based craft beer brewing company, has launched Yakima Red, a limited edition seasonal beer, to the trade market as the latest addition to the range of craft beers from the company.

The brewing company says the new beer has been created to show off US aroma hops grown in the Yakima Valley, Washington State. Yakima Red pairs Yakima hops with UK and European malt for a balance of depth and flavour.

Alastair Hook, Brewmaster at Meantime London said the beer was part of a concerted effort to bring more craft beers to a trade market.

“Yakima Red is a great example of Meantime London’s mission to offer the trade diversity by creating a range of beers for a variety of drinking occasions and consumers. We believe that this approach will help us all change the way the public views beer as a category and that there is a huge sales opportunity in creating a more sophisticated beer drinker who is better-educated and willing to pay more for quality at the pump,” he said.

Veal and roast pork

The new beer uses UK ale and crystal malt with German caramel malt to give it a distinctive deep red colour. Meantime London says the beer has notes of grapefruit and clementine and recommends Meantime Yakima Red as a match for veal, crispy roast pork, ham hock terrine or charcuterie.

Steve Schmitt, Head of Brewing at Meantime London’s Greenwich brewery said the Yakima Red beer was inevitable having enjoyed the particular hops previously.

“Having fallen in love 20 years ago with the unique flowery and fruity aromas the hop varieties from the Yakima Valley bring to beer, the Meantime team felt it was the right time to brew a beer to show off these North American gems. We felt the best way to do so was to bring the hops together with a solid, ruby red-base beer made from the best malt Europe can offer," he said.

“As an American myself, I was excited about the opportunity to create a marriage of those ingredients and flavours to make Yakima Red a true blend of European and American styles and flavours,” he added.
