Ritz chef Adam Smith wins 2012 Roux Scholarship

Adam Smith, sous chef at London hotel The Ritz has been named this year's Roux Scholar, earning himself a three month stage in a three Michelin-starred restaurant and lifetime support from the Roux family. 

Smith, who was entering the competition for the first time, beat five other finalists to the prize following the final at Westminster Kingsway College yesterday where candidates were given a look at a recipe just 30 minutes before having to prepare and present it to judges. 

Following the last heat, finalists attended the awards ceremony at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel where the winner was revealed. 

After the regional finals, Smith noted how tough the annual competition is and thanked his fellow employees for their support. 

"I've had a lot of support from John Williams and the team at the Ritz, I'm glad I didn't let them down," he said. 

Judges for the prestigious competition include Michel Roux Jnr, Brian Turner, Andrew Fairlie, David Nicholls and Sat Bains.

Previous Roux Scholarship winners include Fairlie and Bains, Simon Hulstone, Matthew Tomkinson and Daniel Cox.
