The writer and PR businesswoman Lynne Franks is calling on hospitality businesses to do more to change the gender gap in the top positions in the industry where women remain under-represented.

Franks, who is hosting an event on the topic at her female business club B.Hive in Covent Garden next month, said restaurant, hotel and pub and bar businesses needed to support the Women 1st initiative from the sector skills council People 1st.

"Whilst the majority of the workforce in the hospitality and travel industry is female, only 6 per cent of senior director level positions are held by women. That’s half the national average and it is vital for employers in the sector to take steps to help women climb the career ladder effectively," she said.

The Women 1st initiative, which was created in 2009, is designed to help women in the hospitality, passenger transport and travel and tourism sectors achieve their ambitions through campaigning, networking, awards and Government-funded mentoring.

The Women 1st Event at B.Hive will take place on May 16.
