Train bookings website thetrainline.com has documented the price of lunch at Michelin-starred restaurants across the UK to show rail passengers that eating in well-rated restaurants may not be as expensive as they may think.

The website has compared the prices of a set lunch at 129 Michelin-starred venues to find out where the most affordable could be eaten.

Tom Kerridge's two Michelin-starred pub The Hand and Flowers in Marlow came out at the best value at £15 for two courses while Ockenden Manor in West Sussex followed closely behind at £16.50. Arbutus in London, owned by Anthony Demetre and Will Smith, is the best value in London, the survey found, coming in at £17.95 for three courses.

Having compiled an infographic to show prices (see below), thetrainline.com said it was aiming to show how accessible Michelin-starred restaurants could be, with many's lunchtime offerings on a par pricewise with non-Michelin-starred restaurants.

It said: "Eating at the best restaurants in the UK is not as out of reach as you may think. For passionate foodies, Michelin star food is one of the finer things in life. However, many people instinctively feel that these fantastic restaurants are out of their price range. We disagree, and feel that these elite dining experiences might not be as expensive as you think and could well be worth a day trip."

Twenty restaurants who only serve a la carte menus at lunch or do not serve lunch at all were not included in the list, but appear at the end of the infographic.

The top five best value Michelin-starred restaurants:

  • Hand and Flowers, Marlow: £15
  • Ockenden Manor, Haywards Heath: £16.50
  • The Olive Branch & Beech House, Rutland: £16.95
  • Butchers Arms, Southam: £17
  • Sir Charles Napier, Chinnor: £17.50
