Apex Hotels has joined forces with Queen Margaret University (QMU) in Edinburgh to create a Centre of Hospitality Excellence, providing practical on-the-job training to students studying for a degree in hospitality.

From October, 32 hospitality students at QMU will take three practical units in the areas of front-of-house, food and beverage and housekeeping at Apex Hotels' European Hotel at Haymarket, Edinburgh.

Successful completion of the units will go towards students' first year marks and students will also be given the chance to work part-time at the hotel at the end of their first year.

The initiative, which will be overseen by Lynn Abernethy, formerly of Sodexo, is designed to arm hospitality students with practical and professional skills while they study for their degrees.

Apex Hotels chairman Norman Springford said: "By offering this additional ‘real life’ experience to students, it is our wish that they emerge from their degree course with not only a professional qualification but with valuable hotel experience. We believe that this combination will increase the number of capable graduates ready to become the future leaders of the hospitality industry."
