The award was the culmination of British Roast Dinner Week, which ran at the start of October. The Phoenix Inn - a Punch Taverns pub - fended off competition from four other finalists to take the title.
“We are over the moon to have won the Best British Roast Dinner title," said Sisi Ryder, the Phoenix Inn's manager. "We’ve been working so hard for the last three years and have always been particular about provenance, seasonality and freshness.
"Andrew, my husband and chef, believes in serving food that our grandparents would recognise and he never compromises his standards, even when we're rushed off our feet. It's great to know that all our efforts have paid off.”
Sarah Branagan, manager for sauces at Knorr - which sponsored the award, added: “All the finalists served our mystery diner a delicious roast dinner, but Sisi’s winning plate stood out above the rest. Sisi should be very proud of her achievement, because her gravy was ‘spot-on’"
