Companies with innovative ways of reducing and dealing with food waste are being urged to enter this year's Sustainable Restaurant Awards
Unilever Food Service (UFS) is encouraging all hospitality businesses to share their food waste strategies for the chance to become a 'sustainable champion' by entering the Sustainable Restaurant Association's (SRA) newest category in this year's awards.

This year the SRA is introducing an extra six categories to its annual awards with The Best Food Waste Strategy category not only one of the newest, but also the first that is open to non-SRA members.

UFS managing director Tracey Rogers said the company had come on board to support the awards this year to highlight the operators who had adopted sustainable ways of disposing of food waste.

“Following the success of our United Against Waste campaign – which brought the industry together to discuss ways of tackling avoidable food waste – we felt passionate about sponsoring this new award," she said. "In this climate, we want to celebrate the operators that are making small changes to the way they work to help the environment and, more importantly, save money.”

Award entries

The category is open to any business operating within the industry with those wanting to enter asked to provide details of their business strategy for food waste management -from the equipment installed to manage food waste to staff training and customer communication.

Entrants have until Monday 28 January to send in their entries which should be emailed to Ed Franklin at the SRA or sent directly to the SRA.

Winners of awards will be announced at a ceremony on 4 February at the OXO Tower, London, where SRA president Raymond Blanc and chef Bruno Loubet will be in attendance

Mark Linehan, managing director of the SRA, which this year will introduce the Raymond Blanc Sustainable Hero Award and regional restaurant commendations to its list of awards, said: "With more than 400 restaurants having completed the rating already, competition for the awards is going to be really fierce. We saw an incredibly high standard at the 2012 awards and that has inspired the winners and those who just missed out others to go the extra mile.

‘We believe that these awards are not only providing restaurants with the recognition they deserve for their terrific efforts, but they are also shining a light on the highest restaurant standards and helping push the whole industry towards a more responsible way of operating

Entries for the Best Food Waste Strategy category can be emailed to Ed Franklin at rq@gurfen.bet.hx or sent to the SRA's offices at 25 Gerrard Street, London, W1D 6JL.
