The UK World Pastry Cup team are hoping for a top seven finish in Lyon

The 13th Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie kicks off on 27 January - the UK team will take their turn to prepare a set of chocolate and fruit-based ice-cream desserts as well as sugar, chocolate and ice sculptures on the following day when the results will also be announced.

22 teams of elite pastry chefs will be competing for the title which was claimed last year by Spain and has also been won by Japan, USA, Italy, Belgium and France, who have scooped the prize six times.

Speaking to BigHospitality during an intense training session, the UK team and team president Martin Chiffers revealed they were hoping for a top seven finish at the end of the gruelling ten-hour contest.

The UK Bocuse d'Or team are hoping to channel the London 2012 Olympic spirit

Almost as famous as the legendary chef it is named after; the world's leading culinary contest will follow in the wake of the World Pastry Cup on 29 and 30 January.

Adam Bennett from Simpsons Restaurant in Birmingham will be lining up alongside chefs from 23 other nations. He will be quietly confident this could be one of the best years for the UK in the competition.

Bennett and his team will be working with familiar Irish beef for the meat element of their entry and begin the contest after receiving time off from their day jobs, increased funding and the use of a professional training kitchen.

UK president Brian Turner has called on the team to channel the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic Games and has said he hopes the public will get behind the chefs as they did the home nation Olympians.

BigHospitality will be providing updates on our social networking channels and will be revealing the results and all the reaction online.
