More than a third of diners used their smartphones to book a table for Valentine's Day this year with online and mobile bookings up almost 31 per cent on the previous year.

The figures, from online reservations and marketing service provider Livebookings, show the increasing growth in online bookings with smartphones and tablets used in 34 per cent and 20 per cent of cases respectively.

In all 180,000 diners booked tables at restaurants on 14 February via Livebookings' systems with 250,000 reservations made in total over the Valentine's weekend.

Yan-Ping Mew from twotwentytwo Restaurant & Bar at The Landmark London hotel said: “We’ve seen an incremental increase in business through online and mobile bookings this year, but Valentine’s Day has thrown into sharp relief how many people now think online first when they come to book a table.”
