El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, has been named the best restaurant in the world by Restaurant magazine in its World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2013 list, snatching top spot from Noma.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2013, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, saw 49 of the top 50 restaurants in the world descend on The Guildhall in London earlier tonight (29 April) for the unveiling of the 11th list (scroll down for map and full table).

The three brothers of El Celler de Can Roca - Joan (executive chef), Josep (head sommelier) and Jordi (pâtissier) Roca - jubilantly took to the stage to collect the top award of the night, having seen the three-Michelin-starred Catalonian restaurant place second on the list for the past two years in a row. Read how it happened on the night.

Danish restaurant Noma, led by Rene Redzepi, was unable to match El Bulli’s record of four years in a row as the World's Best Restaurant, dropping to number two on the list, while Italy’s Osteria Francescana moved up two places to take third spot.

Three of the top 10 restaurants in the world are from Spain, with the two San Sebastian-based venues, Mugaritz and Arzak, placing fourth and eighth respectively.

But the full World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2013 list was once again dominated by the US which had six restaurants in the top 50 - the highest being New York’s Eleven Madison Park at number four. France was also represented by six restaurants; five of which are based in Paris, the highest being L’Arpege at 16.

The below infographic shows exactly how each country fared this year, in terms of their influence on the full World's 50 Best Restaurants list. One point was awarded for the restaurants in 50th place, rising to 50 points given to the top restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca. The points were then attributed to each country, which generated some interesting conclusions.

For Britain, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2013 does not make such a good read. Once again, only three UK restaurants have made it into the World's 50 Best List- the joint lowest number in the list’s 11-year history.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, which opened in 2011, was this year’s highest-placed UK restaurant, shifting up two places to ninth. Brett Graham’s The Ledbury climbed one spot to 14th but Blumenthal’s other restaurant - The Fat Duck in Bray - was this year’s biggest faller, dropping 20 places to number 33 on the list.

Along with the unveiling of the list, there were several special awards given out to restaurants and individuals; including Nadia Santini, head chef at Dal Pescatore in Italy, being named the Veuve Clicquot Best Female Chef, and Alain Ducasse, who picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award.
