Five emerging chefs are set to compete in a 'live culinary battle' this week for the chance to win a year-long apprenticeship with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and staff at River Cottage HQ in Axminster.

Finalists Florence Cornish, Jack Botha, Freyja Davis, Sam Lomas and Ian Chin have been picked to compete in the last round of the River Cottage Rising Star 2013 competition for the chance to become the face of its new Young Chef Apprenticeship Scheme.

They will have to prepare a dish for judges Gill Meller, Steven Lamb and Stef Smith at River Cottage HQ on Thursday (11 July) before one winner is picked and given 12 months of employment at River Cottage's school.

Entrants, aged between 16 and 19, had to upload videos that demonstrated their love of food and outlined their ambitions to become chef to Youtube before finalists were chosen.

The competition was launched to coincide with the expansion of River Cottage's apprenticeship scheme, which has doubled this year to offer 70 places to budding young chefs.
