Andrew Dargue and Donna Conroy, the duo behind London vegetarian restaurants Vanilla Black and Orchard, are launching a smaller, takeaway-focussed offshoot of the latter casual dining concept.

Opening on Laystall street in Clerkenwell in the coming week, ‘Little Orchard’ will serve takeaway breakfast, lunch and tea, coffee and cake, with about eight seats available inside.

With the Michelin-recommended Vanilla Black operating well, Dargue said the Orchard concept was a way of ‘bringing vegetarian cuisine to the masses’.

“Opening a casual eatery like Orchard was new ground for us”, he said. “But achieving our aim of constantly inventing new British-inspired dishes for a weekly changing menu has been a hugely rewarding challenge and, more importantly, has proved a real hit with diners.

“Our aim has never been to ‘push’ vegetarianism; rather to demonstrate that meat-free cookery can be delicious and creative. As a result, the lack of meat on the menu is irrelevant to most of our customers, who simply enjoy the food.”

Overseen by head chef Alice Hansen, Little Orchard’s dishes include chocolate and salty peanut breakfast biscuit, white wine & sea aster soup with oat bread and courgette cake with lemon buttercream.

Little Orchardopens at 6 Laystall Street this week.
