Joining the likes of OXO Tower, St John and The River Café, who have supported Streetsmart since its launch in 1998, are the newly Michelin-starred Social Eating House, Lima and Angler restaurants as well as new openings Merchant’s Tavern and Union Street Café.
The campaign has grown from a handful of Soho restaurants to over 550 establishments participating in 22 UK cities, each adding the optional £1 donation to bills throughout November and December. MeatLiquor raised £14,000 last year, vegetarian restaurant Terre à Terre raised £3,000 and pubs such as The Palmerston in East Dulwich receive donations from a wide range of diners.
Gordon Ramsay, whose restaurants have been amongst the campaign’s top fundraisers for the last 10 years, said: “StreetSmart has become part of Christmas for us. It’s everyone’s chance to do the right thing at the right time with only the gentlest nudge.
Fellow StreetSmart supporter Jason Atherton added: “It’s great to be able to give something back through the joy of cooking."
