German-based budget hotel chain Motel One looks set to open a new £18million hotel in Glasgow by summer 2015 as it forges ahead with its UK expansion plans.

Glasgow City Council has granted planning permission for the new 370 plus bed hotel, which will be located in Oswald Street next to Central Station and in the international finance services district.

Buccleuch Property, which sold the Evolution site to the hotel chain, said contractors were expected to start work on the new development early next year.

“When completed, it will offer one of Scotland’s largest hotels in terms of number of rooms, and strengthen what is already a very positive story about Glasgow as a progressive international destination,” Sandy Smith, development director of Buccleuch Property said.

“The deal with Motel One is an extremely positive one for Glasgow. Its development will continue to encourage economic development in the city, creating hundreds of construction jobs, as well as via its operation going forward.”

A spokesperson for Motel One confirmed it would be opening a new hotel in Glasgow but could not release further details.

Last summer the budget chain, which opened its first hotel in Munich in 2000, revealed plans to open a second venue in Edinburgh and sites in London and Newcastle. It also intends to increase its hotel portfolio across Europe from 39 to around 60 hotels by 2014.

“The success of Motel One Group is decisively based on the concept ‘Great design for little money’ provided at first-class, inner city locations. High service standards, valuable materials and good design are the distinctive features of all Motel Ones,” a spokesperson said at the time.
