More than 200 restaurants in Brighton have signed up to a new campaign offering American Express card holders five pounds off the cost of their bill.

The nationwide initiative, called Small Business Saturday, is due to run on 7 December and gives small merchants including shops and independent businesses the opportunity to offer £5 cash back every time a card-holding customer spends at least £10.

The credit will automatically appear on the cardholder’s statement which means participating businesses do not have to do anything different when processing the transaction. Brighton-based The Ginger Dog and The Hand in Hand are among the south east venues taking part.

The day was founded by American Express in the US three years ago to celebrate small businesses and encourage customers to shop in independent stores on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Mark Roper, head of merchant services UK at American Express said: “We’re delighted that Small Business Saturday is coming to the UK as it is a brilliant way of championing independent retailers, encouraging customers to Shop Small and encouraging businesses to think creatively about how they can take advantage of increased footfall on the day.”
