The Sun Tavern – the second bar from The Umbrella Project team – opened in London’s Bethnal Green this week.

Located on Bethnal Green Road at the site of the former Sun Inn pub, the bar is serving a selection of ‘classic mixed drinks’ inspired by pre-war recipes, as well as fine ales, bar snacks and coffee.

The Umbrella Team, which opened the Discount Suit Company bar in Whitechapel earlier this year, completely renovated the site and unearthed a number of its historical features.

The tavern features a wooden, copper-topped bar as the centrepiece of the room, with high stools beside it and leather banquette-style seating throughout. The bar also boasts a record player with a collection of rock 'n' roll albums which customers will be encouraged to play and add to.

Mixed drinks and bar snacks

Mixed drinks on the menu include The Bogcutter, a blend of apricot brandy, Amontillado sherry, honey water and ginger, and the Jacques de Sores, which is a mixture of Rhum Agricole, Cuban rum, Velvet Falernum, Angostura, honey water and lime juice, topped with Prosecco.

The drinks menu also includes a number of single serve punches served in individual tankards or vintage punch bowls for sharing, and the bar is one of the few places in London serving poitín, a traditional Irish moonshine-style spirit made from malted barley.

The beer list will change every third month and features a 'Local Hero' section of fine ales from east London microbreweries. Red, white and sparkling wine are also on offer.

Open from 9am, The Sun Tavern is serving pastries and freshly brewed coffees early in the morning. Bar snacks including pork pies, scotch eggs, and 'deluxe' grilled sandwiches are available throughout the day.
