Dishoom named best UK eatery by Yelp

The Indian restaurant beat previous winner Regency Café to the top spot on this year’s list, with Dinner by Heston Blumenthal coming in third.

Dishoom founder Shamil Thakrar said: “We couldn’t be more delighted to hear this news. We feel privileged just to be able to serve the guests who come through our doors for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and perhaps share a little bit of our love for Bombay food and culture with them.

“We’re truly blown away that so many people have chosen to share their opinions of us online to help us reach the top spot.” 

Yelp’s Top 100 is compiled using its own review and star-rating data, and spans Michelin starred restaurants, greasy spoons, fish and chip shops, burger joints and coffee shops across the UK.

Dishoom Covent Garden scores an average of four stars over 370 reviews on Yelp, with diners praising its ‘excellent service’, ‘authentic’ atmosphere and ‘delicious’ food.

Dishoom - a bombay café​

Dishoom was founded by Shamil and Kavi Thakrar in 2010, and now has three restaurants in London.

Speaking to BigHospitality recently​​, Shamil Thakrar said the concept was inspired by the cafés opened by Iranian immigrants in Bombay the 1920s. 

“These Irani cafes were the first spaces where people could dine out, regular people who weren’t very wealthy, for a decent amount,” he said.

The restaurants feature antique furniture and fittings sourced from Mumbai, and serve an all-day menu of breakfasts, small plates, grills, biryanis, salad plates, rolls and curries.
