Travelodge has announced plans to open three hotels in shopping centres across the UK in a £22m deal.

The chain will open hotels in The Mall in Wood Green, London, The Marlets in Burgess Hill, and The Mall in Bromley.

The Wood Green site is owned by Capital & Regional. Subject to planning, Travelodge will open a 78-room hotel on the premises at the beginning of 2017.

New River Retail own The Marlets Shopping Centre in Burgess Hill. Planning permission for a 63-room hotel has been submitted with a view of opening the hotel at the end of 2017.

Travelodge plans to open its 58-room hotel at the Henry Boot Development-owned The Mall, Bromley, in summer 2017.

The hotels will join Travelodge’s existing group of seven shopping centre hotels based in the Trafford Centre, Sheffield Meadohall, Gateshead Metro Centre, Worcester Cathedral Plaza, Edmonton Green shopping centre and the Stamford Quarter in Altrincham.

The announcement also includes plans to build a 74-room hotel at intu Lakeside shopping centre in Thurrock, Essex.

Paul Harvey, Travelodge’s managing director of property, said: “Building a Travelodge hotel in a shopping centre is a win-win solution. It helps shopping centre owners to add value, generate additional income and increase footfall by developing underused assets such as: empty office space, the top of low rise buildings and car parks.  Our customers benefit by being located in a desired quality location with a host of shops and restaurants on their door step.

“As part of our UK expansion programme we have identified the potential to open a further 250 hotels. To support this development and to leverage the interest shown by our recent shopping centre partnerships, we have written to 20 UK parent companies of shopping centres, to explain the benefits of utilising underused assets within their holdings.”
