Having closed its only UK branch in March 2014, Earl of Sandwich has announced that it is to be returning to England in Bluewater shopping centre, Essex.

Owned by Earl Enterprises, the 551sq.ft site will share its covers with other dining outlets at the centre on the food court.

The chain has 27-stores across the USA, with the menu at its Bluewater branch mimicking those across the pond with a selection of hot sandwiches, hand-tossed salads and wraps, pastas, Earl’s Pizzas, soups, fresh fruit smoothies, triple-chocolate brownies, and coffee by Nespresso.

Alex Garland, managing director for EMEA at Earl Enterprises, which owns Earl of Sandwich, said: “We have been seeking a launch site in the UK for some time and Bluewater really stood out.  Its reputation is unrivalled, both in the UK and the wider European context, which is why it is so popular with expanding international brands.”

Opening alongside Earl of Sandwich is Shawa, a sister brand to the Lebanese-inspired canteen-style restaurant Comptoir Libanais, which will open its first location outside of London on a 472sq.ft site. Champagne bar, Oh You Pretty Things, rounds off the new openings at the shopping centre.

Russell Loveland, portfolio director at Land Securities, who acted on the deal, and co-owner and asset manager of Bluewater, said: “Earl of Sandwich is another great addition to Bluewater’s line-up of leading UK and international brands.  Their unique combination of heritage and high quality grab-and-go food adds something new to Bluewater, providing guests with even greater choice.

“Shawa is an equally exciting arrival, and is opening because its sister brand, Comptoir Libanais, has traded consistently well.  Both have made their debuts outside London at Bluewater, reinforcing our position as the first choice location for expanding brands.”

Shelley Sandzer acted on behalf of Bluewater.
