An Italian restaurateur is to bring the ‘exquisite cuisine of Bologna’ to the UK after acquiring his first venue in the City of London.

Dr Antonio Chiodo and partners have secured the site of the former Bevis Marks restaurant in Aldgate – which closed on 24 December after thirteen years of trading.

The 100-cover site will re-open as Al Matarello and serve ‘authentic’ Italian cooking.

It marks the first international site for Dr Chiodo, who runs two restaurants in Bologna.

Stewart Harkness, associate director at Christie & Co, who brokered the restaurant deal, said: “This is a great location to start in the City, being close to Aldgate Station and the wealth of commercial office buildings the area has to offer.

“Furthermore, there is extensive development being conducted just across the road, where it is said that a new hotel is to be built. All of which makes this site ideal for this new and exciting venture.”

The restaurant was sold off a guide price of £175,000 on a leasehold basis.
