The 50-seat Grill at McQueen will open officially on 4 October, with a soft launch the week before, and offer a wide selection of steaks, alongside wines, bourbons and whiskeys, and cocktails.
As executive head chef of the new site, Sandiford is to play a key consultancy role, and will help with everything from creating the menu’s dishes to training the kitchen team. As head chef, James will head up the kitchen.
Dishes will focus on locally-sourced ingredients, with bread coming from local Hackney bakery The Dusty Knuckle.
Commenting on the new opening, Sandiford said: “I’m really excited to be part of this new venture at McQueen, and have created a menu that highlights the very best of the seasonal produce in the UK. Each ingredient comes from suppliers that I have worked with over the years. Guests can expect some really special cuts of meat.”
Sandiford is now no longer involved in Hawksmoor, but he first joined the steak group – which was founded in 2006 by Huw Gott and Will Beckett and now runs to six sites across London plus one in Manchester ‒ in 2011.
