The new venue from Shrimoyee Chakraborty and her team is aiming for a ‘markedly different vibe’ inspired by Brixton’s musical and multi-cultural history, in contrast to the ‘cosy and homely’ feel of the first site.
The menu will be in the same style as the Fitrovia offering ‒ inspired by street food and traditional main dishes from Kolkata, India ‒ but also feature new additions of biryani and chicken chaap, a Mughlai-style dish slow-cooked with a creamy poppy seed and cashew nut sauce.
Drinks will be directly inspired by Bengali flavours, including traditional Calcutta-style ‘shorbot’ cocktails.
The décor will include neon signage, hand-painted murals, posters by Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray, and memorabilia from Bengali-style artists.
Calcutta Street in Fitzrovia, opened on Tottenham Street in late 2016, after Chakraborty became known for her successful food blog and Bengali-food pop-ups.
