Last year’s inaugural competition sought to elevate the simple Spanish tapas snack to new heights, and crowned Regent Street’s Aqua Nueva as winner.
Head chef Yahir Gonzales beat the competition with a creation of black seaweed, puffed rice, lobster powder and aioli.

The 2017 live final will take place on 5 September at Ember Yard at 60 Berwick Street, which is part of the Salt Yard Group.
Last year’s entrants – as well as winners Aqua Nueva ‒ also included chefs from Salt Yard, José Pizarro, Social Wine & Tapas, The Modern Pantry, Brindisa Kitchens, Oldroyd, Duende, Copita, Barrica, Camino, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, Riding House Café, Tapas Revolution, and Señor Ceviche.
Judges included food journalists Bob Granleese from The Guardian, food writer Joe Warwick, Time Out’s Laura Richards and Catherine Hanly from website Hot Dinners.
The competition is one of several similar professional-level, one-dish contests across London, including the Hot Dog Challenge, the Sausage Roll Off, and the Slider Decider.
