The no-frills concept is the brainchild of Jorge Felizardo, who co-launched Taberna Mercado with Nuno Mendes, and the creator of Shoreditch’s Boho Mexica Enrique Vivas.
The duo began popping-up in cocktail bar Klub Trop in 2016 and took over the site earlier this year for their first permanent restaurant.
Now Cantina Del 74 has opened at the back of Helgie’s bar in London Fields, serving a mix of tacos, beer and margaritas.
The menu includes a mix of Del 74 favourites and new dishes such as ‘melt in your mouth’ beef brisket with rice and tortilla chips; 24 hour marinated chicken thighs with cucumber salsa; and a Mexican shrimp cocktail.
“Icelandic in the front, Mexican in the back - like a bad haircut - we offer a tequila and mezcal in the back and Helgi's fabulous cocktail selection as well as beers in the front," says Felizardo.
Though there is no word yet on the team's future expansion plans, Vivas adds that the duo are 'like sharks, we gotta keep moving'.
